do State Commissioner-designate, Kassim Afegbua, has dismissed the recent proposal by former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, to serve only one term if elected president in 2027.
Speaking during an appearance on Channels Television’s flagship program, Sunrise Daily, on Wednesday, Afegbua laughed off the idea, calling it unrealistic and politically impractical.
“It is not possible,” he stated bluntly, questioning the sincerity and feasibility of such a pledge in Nigeria’s complex political landscape.
Obi, who finished third in the 2023 presidential election, has recently reignited discussions about a potential 2027 run. In an attempt to appeal to a broader base, he proposed serving just one term to focus on critical reforms and stability. However, critics like Afegbua view the move as a political gimmick rather than a genuine commitment.
Afegbua, a former commissioner for information in Edo State and a vocal political analyst, argued that no Nigerian president would willingly give up the chance to serve two terms, especially when the constitution allows it.
While Obi’s proposal may resonate with some reform-minded voters, Afegbua’s comments reflect the skepticism within the political establishment about the practicality of such promises.
As 2027 inches closer, debates like this are expected to intensify, especially among potential contenders and their critics.
