Why I don’t accept I’m ‘Queen of Afrobeats’ – Tiwa Savage

Award-winning Nigerian singer Tiwa Savage has expressed her discomfort with being referred to as the “Queen of Afrobeats,” stating that the title feels undeserved given the contributions of many other talented female artists in the genre.

In a recent interview with Ebro on Apple Music, Savage acknowledged that while she appreciates the love and recognition from fans, she doesn’t embrace the label because of the weight it carries.

“Yeah, they call me the Queen of Afrobeats, but there are a lot of us that are Queens,” she said.
“Personally, I don’t like that tag. It’s uncomfortable because I feel like if I start accepting it, I need to be humble, and secondly, it doesn’t make sense to me. So, I don’t [accept it]. But I appreciate it.”

Tiwa went on to reflect on why fans might associate the title with her, pointing to her early success in the industry.

“I think it’s just because I was one of the first female artists in Nigeria to break through. I do appreciate that. I’m not taking it for granted.”

Savage’s comments have sparked conversation online, with many praising her humility and continued support for fellow female artists in the Afrobeats scene.
