Hermeto Pascoal, the famous Brazilian jazz musician, has died at the age of 89, his family announced on Saturday.

Known for his long white hair and beard, Pascoal was often called “The Sorcerer” because he could make music using almost anything from traditional instruments to everyday objects.

In a message posted on Instagram, his family said he passed away peacefully, surrounded by loved ones and fellow musicians. They also shared that at the moment of his death, Pascoal’s band was performing live something he would have wanted, as he loved making music.

Pascoal was born in the state of Alagoas, in northeastern Brazil. He became known around the world for his work with famous jazz artist Miles Davis, who even recorded some of Pascoal’s music. These collaborations helped make Pascoal a respected name in international jazz.

He was known as a musical genius who could play many instruments and was especially talented at improvising music on the spot.

Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso honored him on Instagram, calling Pascoal “one of the greatest names in the history of Brazilian music.”
