How Sound Sultan’s Death Affected My Music Career – Seyi Shay

Nigerian singer and songwriter, Seyi Shay, has shared how the death of her mentor, Sound Sultan, deeply affected her music career.

She revealed that after Sound Sultan passed away in 2021, she lost the motivation to continue making music.

Seyi Shay explained that around the same time, she also found out she was pregnant with her daughter. This, along with the pressure and negativity in the music industry, led her to take a break.

Speaking in an interview with TVC, she said:

“During the filming of Nigerian Idol, my mentor and best friend, who was like a father to me, died. That person was Sound Sultan. He was the one who brought me into the Nigerian music industry.

“When I first came to Nigeria, I stayed with him and his wife in FESTAC for a whole year. He introduced me to people in the industry and made sure they looked out for me.

“So when he passed away, it was very hard for me to continue filming Nigerian Idol. I made it to the end, but it was painful. What hurt me the most was that I didn’t get to see him before he died. I was supposed to visit him in New York during a break from filming. He had asked me to bring him something special. Not being able to say goodbye really broke me.

“I felt like I didn’t have the strength to keep doing music without him. My mental health and peace of mind were affected, so I decided to take a break.

“Also, I got pregnant around that time. I told myself I couldn’t raise a child in such a toxic industry, especially with all the pressure and judgment I was facing. So I chose to step back.”
