The spokesperson of the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Darlington Nwauju, has said that the party would be happy to welcome Governor Siminalayi Fubara if he decides to join them.
Speaking on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Tuesday, Nwauju openly invited the governor to defect to the APC.
“If I were the governor of Rivers State, when I return on Thursday, I would announce my defection to the All Progressives Congress,” he said.
“I think the governor should join the APC, and we would gladly receive him into our party.”
When asked if Governor Fubara would become the APC leader in the state if he joined, Nwauju said yes.
He explained that, by the party’s rules, any sitting governor who joins automatically becomes the party leader in the state.
“By the convention of our party, if he joins the APC, he becomes the leader of the party,” Nwauju added.
Nwauju also spoke about the performance of the outgoing Administrator of Rivers State, retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, who led the state under emergency rule for the past six months.
He said the APC has not called for a probe of Ibas’ administration.
“The APC has not officially demanded that Ibas account for his six-month tenure.
The budget he worked with was approved by the National Assembly, and a committee from the House of Representatives is overseeing that period.
“I expect the committee to do its job, release a report, and inform Nigerians about what they discovered. That is part of their duty as lawmakers.”
Meanwhile, both President Bola Tinubu and suspended Governor Fubara are expected back in the country on Tuesday, ahead of Rivers State’s return to democratic rule on Thursday.
President Tinubu is returning to Abuja after cutting short his vacation in France. Governor Fubara, on the other hand, is coming back from London.
Their return comes as the outgoing Administrator, Ibas, steps up preparations to hand over power, with several transition activities already underway.
President Tinubu had traveled on September 4 for a 10-day holiday in France and the UK, but he ended the trip earlier than planned.
