Tributes are pouring in for ARISE Television anchor, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, who was killed during a robbery attack in Abuja on Monday. Her death has caused widespread grief and renewed calls for better security in Nigeria.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday, ARISE TV described the 29-year-old journalist and lawyer as “smart, bold, and beautiful,” saying her work at the station and her impact on the country will always be remembered.

Somtochukwu, known as “Sommie” by her colleagues, first appeared on ARISE TV as a guest after winning the Miss Tourism Nigeria pageant. She later represented Nigeria at the Miss Tourism World competition in Quanzhou, China, in 2023. In September 2024, she officially joined ARISE as a news anchor, producer, and reporter.

ARISE said Sommie used her legal background and journalistic skills to speak up for out-of-school children and to fight against sexual and gender-based violence.

One of her major reports included covering the presentation of a memorandum for the Reserved Seats for Women Bill at the National Assembly on September 21, where she joined millions of Nigerian women in calling for better representation of women in politics.

“Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will live on in our hearts,” ARISE said in the statement.

The FCT Police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the incident and said that investigations are ongoing.

Since the news broke, many viewers and social media users have shared emotional tributes, praising Sommie’s bravery and professionalism.

Her tragic death has sparked fresh demands for the government to tackle the worsening security situation in the country.
