EFCC to journalists, CSOs: Join us to expose dark corners of corruption

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Kaduna Zonal Directorate, has called on journalists and civil society organisations (CSOs) to strengthen their role in exposing corrupt practices and safeguarding the nation’s economy.

Speaking at a one-day sensitisation workshop held on Thursday, December 11, the Acting Zonal Director, ACE I Bawa Usman Kaltungo, emphasised that the fight against corruption cannot be won without the active involvement of the media and civil society.

He delivered the remarks on behalf of the EFCC Executive Chairman, Mr Ola Olukoyede.

Kaltungo described the choice of participants as “deliberate and strategic,” noting that CSOs serve as the conscience of society and act as a link between citizens and government, while journalists “wield the powerful pen that shapes public opinion, holds power accountable, and illuminates the dark corners where corruption thrives.”

He praised the role both groups have played over the years in supporting the Commission’s work.

According to him, many of the EFCC’s landmark investigations were triggered by intelligence and alerts from journalists and civil society actors who exposed suspicious financial activities, abuse of office, and governance gaps.

“These contributions have not gone unnoticed,” he said. “We see you not merely as observers or critics, but as partners in progress.”

Kaltungo stressed that the EFCC aims to build a more structured and robust partnership with both groups, noting that the fight against corruption is “a collective national endeavour that requires synergy, trust, and shared intelligence.”

He urged participants to use the workshop as a platform for open conversation, asking questions, seeking clarifications, and offering perspectives that could improve anti-corruption efforts.

The Acting Zonal Director also commended staff of the Public Affairs Department for their role in organising the workshop, before he formally declared the session open.

The sensitisation workshop brought together representatives of civil society, journalists, and EFCC officials to discuss strategies for collaboration, information sharing, and enhanced public engagement in the anti-corruption drive.
