FCT: Resident Doctors Begin Indefinite Strike

Resident doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have started an indefinite strike, saying the government has failed to meet their demands.

In a statement signed by the association’s president, Dr. George Ebong, the doctors said the decision was made during an emergency meeting held on Sunday.

According to Dr. Ebong, the strike will continue until the government shows real commitment to improving the welfare of doctors and the healthcare system in the FCT.

He said, “The government must meet all our demands, both financial and non-financial.

“The FCTA (Federal Capital Territory Administration) has refused to listen to us. The Congress has agreed that the strike will begin from this morning, Monday, September 15, 2025, and will continue until our demands are met.

“This is not a personal attack on the FCT Minister or any official, but a protest against a failing health system.”

Dr. Ebong explained that 26 doctors have not been paid, despite over seven months of discussions with the authorities. He also pointed out other problems, including:

  • Unemployment affecting patient care
  • Unexplained salary deductions
  • Lack of staff promotions since 2023
  • Some hospitals lacking basic equipment like X-ray machines
  • Poor working conditions in many hospitals

He called on the FCT Minister to take urgent action to fix these issues and improve the healthcare system.
