Insecurity: Sokoto to rehabilitate displaced persons in two LGs

The Sokoto State Government has pledged swift and decisive action to facilitate the safe return of residents displaced by recent bandit attacks in Tureta and Dange/Shuni Local Government Areas.

Speaking during a visit to internally displaced persons currently sheltering at the Tureta Local Government Secretariat on Thursday, the Deputy Governor, Alhaji Idris Gobir, assured victims that efforts were underway to restore peace and security to the affected communities.

“We are taking all necessary steps to ensure you return to your homes in the shortest possible time,” Gobir told a gathering of men, women, and children who fled their villages following the attacks.

The deputy governor said the state government, in collaboration with security agencies, is working on comprehensive measures to curb the rising insecurity in the area.

He expressed confidence that improved security presence and operations would soon yield positive results.

“The administration of Governor Ahmed Aliyu remains committed to the protection of lives and property.

“We will not relent in our pursuit of lasting peace,” he affirmed.

Gobir also urged residents to remain vigilant and report any suspicious persons or activities to security agencies for prompt action.

To cushion the hardship faced by the displaced persons, the deputy governor announced the donation of food items and cash assistance on behalf of the state government.

Earlier, the Chairman of Tureta Local Government, Alhaji Aliyu Tureta, said the recent wave of attacks had forced many villagers to abandon their homes, seeking refuge at the council secretariat and at Lambar Tureta.

He appealed for the establishment of permanent security camps in Kuruwa, Lambar Tureta, and Tsamiya communities, noting that such a move would go a long way in restoring confidence among residents and deterring further attacks.

Also speaking, the member representing Bodinga, Tureta, and Dange/Shuni Federal Constituency, Alhaji Nasiru Bobo, sympathised with the affected residents and praised the state government for responding swiftly to the crisis.

He assured all that urgent steps were being taken at the federal level to support security operations and humanitarian response.

At the Dange/Shuni Local Government Secretariat, the Council Chairman, Alhaji Aminu Bodai, highlighted the recurring nature of bandit attacks during the rainy season and reiterated the need for the deployment of a security base in the Dabaghi area.

He commended the government for providing relief materials and reaffirmed the council’s commitment to collaborating with security agencies and other stakeholders to bring lasting peace to the area.
