Lagos Police Begin Investigation Into Death of Former Ondo Governorship Candidate

The Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Olohundare Jimoh, has ordered a detailed investigation into the death of former Ondo State governorship candidate, Bamidele Akingboye.

This comes about 10 days after his death was first reported on 3rd September.

The decision to investigate followed the circulation of a disturbing photo on social media, which appeared to show bruises on Mr Akingboye’s head. This raised questions about whether his death was natural, as earlier reports claimed he died peacefully at his home in the VGC area of Lagos.

The photo has led to growing public concern, with many people — including human rights activists — calling for a full and transparent investigation to uncover the true cause of his death.

In a statement posted on its official X (formerly Twitter) page on Sunday, the Lagos State Police Command confirmed that the Commissioner of Police had directed the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) to take over the case.

“The Commissioner has instructed the Deputy Commissioner of Police, SCID, to carry out a discreet investigation into the death,” the statement said.

It also confirmed that detectives, along with the Command’s Crime Scene Investigation team, had visited the residence where Mr Akingboye’s body was found.
