The medal count has started at the 22nd National Sports Festival in Ogun State, with Team Lagos entering the books as one of the early entrants in the 45kg women’s weightlifting event on Sunday, PUNCH Online reports.

Ronke Olarinoye won gold for Lagos in the women’s snatch, lifting a best of 65kg to edge Esther Amarachi Chijioke of the Invited Junior Athletes, who lifted 64kg, while Christiana Allorima of Rivers claimed the bronze with a best snatch of 61kg.

Olarinoye’s gold was won at 12:57pm, and could well be the first medal of the 2024 National Sports Festival – pending the confirmation of the Main Organising Committe, as other medal events also took place on Sunday.

The weightlifting event began on Sunday at the NYSC Orientation camp, Sagamu, just as other events like Kung Fu, deaf badminton, and badminton also got underIkenne and Abeokuta, respectively.

The opening ceremony of the Gateway Games 2024 will also take place today at the MKO Abiola Sports Complex in Abeokuta.
